Masters of Iga Ware Since 1832

Founded in 1832 in the pottery village of Marubashira, Nagatani-en is one of Japan's most respected producers of traditional Iga ware. For almost two centuries, the family-run kiln has combined generations of craftsmanship with a spirit of innovation, creating cookware that honours centuries-old techniques while fitting seamlessly into modern kitchens.

Located in the historic Iga region of Mie Prefecture, Nagatani-en works with a unique local clay formed from the ancient bed of Lake Biwa over four million years ago. Rich in fossilised organic matter, this exceptional clay becomes naturally porous when fired, giving Iga ware its renowned heat retention, durability and gentle, even cooking performance. These qualities have made Iga ware a favourite of professional chefs and home cooks throughout Japan for generations.

At the heart of Nagatani-en's philosophy is the belief that "the maker should be the true user." Every design is developed through practical experience, ensuring each piece is not only beautiful but genuinely enjoyable to cook with. The company continues to preserve the traditions of Iga pottery while encouraging the Japanese custom of gathering around a shared meal, where cookware becomes part of the dining table as well as the cooking process.

We are delighted to offer a carefully selected range from Nagatani-en, including their classic Donabe cooking pots, the acclaimed Kamadosan rice cooker and the versatile Miso Pot—all handcrafted in Japan using authentic Iga clay.
