Frequently asked questions

A Konro grill is a traditional Japanese barbecue grill, designed to bring out the best flavours in grilled meats, seafood, and vegetables. Crafted from high-quality ceramic or diatomaceous earth, Konro grills are renowned for their incredible heat retention and efficiency, allowing for high-temperature, even cooking with minimal charcoal usage.

Using a Konro grill is incredibly simple – quite similar to how you would use a garden barbecue. Use a chimney starter or gas stove to ignite the charcoal until it glows red-hot and then carefully place it inside the grill.

Allow the grill to heat up for a few minutes, ensuring an even cooking surface, and then place your food of choice directly over the grill, adjusting the distance to control heat intensity. After cooking, let the charcoal burn out naturally, and, once cool, remove the ashes.

For the best results, we recommend using binchotan charcoal, which burns longer, produces less smoke, and enhances the flavour of your food.

A Shichirin table barbecue is a compact, traditional Japanese charcoal grill, perfect for indoor and outdoor grilling. Made from heat-retaining ceramic or diatomaceous earth, the Shichirin is designed to deliver intense, even heat, making it ideal for grilling yakitori, seafood, vegetables, and more with precision.

Using one of these is very similar to a Konro grill or traditional barbecue – except you can use them inside. First, use a chimney starter or gas stove to ignite the charcoal until it reaches a red-hot glow, then carefully transfer it into the grill.

Let the grill preheat for a few minutes to ensure an even cooking surface. Once ready, arrange your food directly over the grill – the compact size is perfect for quick and controlled cooking. After grilling, allow the charcoal to burn out naturally. Once cooled, remove the ashes for easy cleanup.

For the best Japanese barbecue experience, we recommend using binchotan charcoal, which burns cleanly, without producing excessive smoke or overpowering flavours.

Our Konro grill kits and Japanese BBQ sets include:

  • Konro grill or Shichirin table barbecue
  • 1-2KG of hexagonal binchotan charcoal briquettes (depending on the set)
  • Bamboo or metal BBQ skewers (depending on the set)
