Frequently asked questions

The pepper tree is valued in Japanese cuisine for its leaves, which are used fresh in spring, and its peppercorns, which are harvested later. The leaves add a fresh, citrusy note to soups and rice dishes, while the peppercorns provide a spicy, tingling flavour that pairs beautifully with grilled meats, noodles, and pickles.

Yes. Pepper trees are hardy plants that can grow well in the UK climate. They prefer a sunny or lightly shaded position and well-drained soil. They can be grown in pots or directly in the ground and respond well to pruning, making them suitable for a range of garden sizes.

They are closely related but not identical. The Japanese pepper tree (Zanthoxylum piperitum) is native to Japan and produces Sansho peppercorns, which have a brighter, more citrusy flavour compared to Szechuan (Zanthoxylum giraldii) pepper. Szechuan is typically considered the Chinese version of the Japanese sansho tree. Both belong to the same genus (Zanthoxylum) and share the characteristic tingling, numbing spice.

In ideal conditions, a Japanese pepper plant can reach 2 metres in height, though it can be kept smaller with regular pruning. Its compact size and attractive foliage make it a popular choice for gardens, patios, and kitchen planters.
