Eriobotrya japonica, or Japanese Medlar, is a small, evergreen tree or large shrub valued for its ornamental leaves, fragrant winter flowers, and sweet edible fruits.
Its long, dark green, leathery leaves create a lush backdrop, while the yellow-white flowers appear at the tips of branches in January–February, filling the garden with a sweet winter scents.
Ripe edible fruits develop in early spring to early summer, producing yellow-orange flesh with a flavour that blends citrus and peach.
Japanese Medlar trees need frost-free conditions from February to May to ensure fruiting, making it ideal for a sheltered wall, courtyard or large conservatory in the UK.
The tree itself is hardy down to around -10°C.
