These useful chopstick rests are part of a beautiful collection produced by renowned Japanese potter Hirokazu Furutani at the historic Furuya kiln.

The Furuya kiln is based in in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, a region celebrated as one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, giving its pottery a heritage rooted in centuries of Japanese ceramic tradition.

Available in kohiki white, soft grey, deep blue and warm ame (amber), these small rests are shaped into a flower design and glazed by hand in four different colours, each one designed to reflect an aspect of nature.

Compact and practical, the rests are designed to keep chopsticks or small utensils neatly in place and off the table surface while adding a pop of colour and texture.

Furutani’s work is valued by collectors of Japanese pottery however these rests are designed to be used and enjoyed every day rather than being kept only for display.

Care Instructions

  1. First use: Wash lightly with a mild detergent before use. As the pottery is absorbent, it may darken or show small spots when wet. This is normal and will disappear once completely dry and does not affect the quality.
  2. Sealing (optional): Boiling the piece in rice water before use can help reduce staining.
  3. Please note that the colour may look different until fully dry.
  4. Before serving oily or dark foods: Briefly soak the piece in clean water or hot water to help prevent staining.
  5. After use: Wash promptly, then dry thoroughly before storing. Putting pieces away while still damp may cause mould or odours.
  6. Microwave use: Safe for the microwave, but not suitable for the oven or over a direct flame.
  7. Dishwasher use: Not recommended, as it may damage the surface over time.
  8. Surfaces: Although the base has been treated, we recommend placing a mat or cloth underneath to protect delicate surfaces.
