Tsubuan is a traditional Japanese sweet red bean paste. Made by Yamasei, from azuki beans exclusively grown on the Island of Hokkaido and sweetened to create a rich flavour that is a staple in many classic Japanese desserts.

Unlike smooth koshian paste, tsubuan retains whole and partially mashed beans, giving it a wonderful chunky texture and a deeper, more rustic character.

Made using high quality beans and prepared in the traditional style, this sweet paste adds both flavour and texture to a wide variety of Japanese sweets and baked goods.

Azuki beans have a naturally mild sweetness and earthy depth, making this paste perfect for creating authentic wagashi (Japanese confectionery) or adding a unique twist to Western desserts.

A must-have ingredient for anyone exploring Japanese baking and desserts.

Store is a cool, dry place and refrigerate once open.

Tsubuan is extremely versatile and can be used in both traditional Japanese recipes and modern desserts:

  • Fillings for Japanese sweets such as dorayaki (pancake sandwiches), taiyaki, and mochi
  • Anko topping for pancakes, waffles, or ice cream
  • Filling for pastries and buns, including anpan (sweet red bean buns)
  • Dessert ingredient for cheesecakes, brownies, or Swiss rolls
  • Simple sweet topping for toast or crumpets
  • Layer in parfaits or desserts with whipped cream and fruit

The chunky texture of tsubuan makes it particularly popular for recipes where the whole azuki beans add visual appeal and bite.
