Frequently asked questions

Nori is made just from seaweed! Japanese nori used to be eaten in paste form. However, nori sheets were invented in 1750, when traditional paper-making techniques were used to make the iconic nori seaweed sheet we know and love today.

Nori is specifically made from red algae seaweed, which is common on the shores of Japan. It’s incredibly tasty, and nori sheets make up some of Japan’s most iconic dishes such as sushi and onigiri.

Yes – nori sheets are generally considered to be very healthy. Nori seaweed sheets can provide protein, vitamins A, C, E and K, several B vitamins (especially B12), iron, magnesium, calcium, and plenty of antioxidants. They’re also considered a high source of fibre, which is fantastic for gut health!

Absolutely! Nori seaweed sheets can be used in many dishes, and they’re often taken straight from the pack. They’re great as a standalone snack; however, many people use nori sheets in traditional Japanese dishes such as sushi.

Nori pairs incredibly well with sushi vinegar, with the umami and sharp flavours coming together to make a fantastic flavour profile. Nori sheets can also be used in soups, salads and other Japanese snack-style dishes such as wraps.

Sushi is the most popular dish that uses nori seaweed sheets – made of rice, raw fish or vegetables such as avocado and cucumber, all wrapped up in nori sheets. However, other dishes such as onigiri – a common picnic snack – use nori sheets. They’re also used in snack wraps, soups, salads and more!
