Frequently asked questions

Making sushi at home is simple, once you understand the basics. Sushi is best when you use quality rice and fresh ingredients - you don’t need to worry about making complicated rolls if you’re a beginner.

Let the rice cool to room temperature before assembling your sushi. For a simple maki roll, place a sheet of nori on the bamboo mat included in the sushi-making kit, evenly spread the sushi rice on the nori, and add your preferred ingredients like fresh fish, avocado, or cucumber.

Roll it tightly with the mat, slice the rolled sushi into bite-sized pieces, and serve with soy sauce, ginger, and wasabi to add that extra kick!

Feeling a bit more confident in your sushi making abilities? As well as our sushi making kits, you can buy all sushi ingredients separately, including sushi rice and nori as the core ingredients of sushi, as well as Japanese rice vinegar, soy sauce, furikake and many other essentials. If you want to add something extra special to your at-home sushi, we also sell fresh wasabi and ginger to add a delicious kick!

When making sushi at home, it’s very important to choose high-quality fish that is “sushi-grade” or “sashimi-grade.” Sushi fish has been frozen to specific temperatures to kill parasites, making it safe to eat raw. Tuna, salmon, yellowtail and snapper are common choices for beginners, with mackerel, sea bass, eel and octopus being great for experienced sushi makers.

Fish Japanese Name Notes
Tuna Maguro One of the most popular choices for beginners.
Salmon Sake/Shake Very common in many sushi rolls.
Yellowtail Hamachi Often used for nigiri.
Snapper Tai Works well for simple sushi rolls.
Mackerel Saba Needs to be cured or marinated before rolling into sushi.
Sea Bass Suzuki Good for a simple nigiri.
Eel Unagi (freshwater) or Anago (saltwater) Always cooked, unlike other types of sushi.
Octopus  Tako Usually boiled before slicing.

When you’re preparing sushi, it can be difficult to get every step right. It’s essential to prepare the sushi rice correctly, which involves rinsing it until the water runs clear, cooking it, and then seasoning it with a mixture of rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. If you want to find out the perfect way to make sushi rice, check out our guide right here!

Getting good at rolling sushi and want to try something new? Why not try and make futomaki (thick rolls) for a classic sushi dish? Or, if you want to try something different than traditional sushi, making Chirashi sushi is a simple and fun way to add a fresh twist to your cooking - check out our recipe for Hijiki Chirashi Sushi for further details.

The shelf life depends on your chosen sushi ingredient. Sauces and seasonings can last a long time in your cupboard once opened, but some of the ingredients in our sushi kits will need to be refrigerated after opening, such as our sushi ginger and fresh soy sauce. However, other ingredients like sushi rice and nori will last longer. Always follow the instructions on the label or product page to keep your items fresh for as long as possible.
