This bent cedarwood sake bottle combines Japanese style with everyday practicality, holding a single 180ml serving, it is ideal for enjoying sake at its freshest. Made from thin sheets of Akita cedar that are steamed and expertly bent into a graceful, circular form to highlight the fine grain of the wood and release a gentle cedar aroma that subtly enhances the taste of the sake.

This bottle has been expertly handcrafted by Odate Kougeisha, a renowned workshop in Ōdate City, Akita Prefecture, dedicated to the traditional Japanese craft of magewappa, the centuries-old art of bentwood woodworking.

Magewappa began as a practical craft used by mountain monks and samurai, who made lightweight, durable containers to store rice and other supplies.

Founded in 1959, the Odate Kougeisha workshop continues a legacy that began over 1,300 years ago, using locally sourced Akita cedar, prized for its fine grain, subtle aroma and natural antibacterial properties. Each piece is made entirely by hand, without glue, using steam-bent cedar which is then then secured with cherry bark stitching or invisible joints to create items that are both durable and timeless.

Remaining faithful to traditional methods and preserving a craft officially recognised as a Traditional Japanese Art Form, their work reflects a quiet commitment to natural materials, functional beauty and Japanese design philosophy, where craftsmanship and simplicity go hand in hand.
