Frequently asked questions

Japanese miso bowls are a small type of bowl that’s ideally sized for traditional miso soup. Miso, traditionally made from dashi stock, is a perfect accompaniment to many Japanese dishes.

Miso soup is traditionally consumed straight from the bowl, without any spoons, as a side to dishes such as sushi, rice dishes and vegetables. Miso bowls often include seasonal optional ingredients based on region and season, such as wakame, tofu and mushrooms.

Japanese miso bowls are often called shiru-wan, or the more polite term, owan. They are specifically designed for hot soups like miso, and are small enough to drink from – no spoons needed, unless you prefer it this way!

Miso bowls are traditionally made from lacquered wood; however, nowadays many Japanese miso bowls are made from ceramic and melamine materials. Our range of miso soup bowls includes a wide variety  of different types and designs, so you can create your own collection of Japanese tableware and serve miso soup perfectly at home!
