Tea Sets
Choosing the right Japanese tea set
Different styles of Japanese tea call for different equipment, and part of the pleasure is finding a set that suits how you like to brew. A traditional Japanese tea set for loose leaf tea will usually centre around a kyusu teapot. These side-handled teapots are designed for green teas such as sencha and genmaicha, allowing the leaves room to unfurl whilst pouring cleanly into small cups. They're practical, balanced in the hand and made for repeated daily use, not just display.
For powdered matcha, the process is different. A matcha green tea set typically includes a chashaku bamboo ladle (for measuring the right amount of matcha powder), a bamboo chasen whisk (for blending the matcha powder with hot water), a chawan bowl (allowing the chasen whisk to move freely and create a smooth, frothy matcha texture), and a kusenaoshi whisk holder, which keeps the chasen in shape after use and extends its lifespan. If you're a beginner or shopping for one, a complete matcha tea set gives you or your loved one everything needed to start preparing matcha traditionally at home.
Many Japanese tea sets are handmade or kiln-fired in small batches, meaning subtle differences in glaze and texture are part of their character. These small imperfections are often what make Japanese ceramics feel personal over time.

Caring for Japanese and matcha tea sets
Most ceramic Japanese tea sets only need gentle care to last for years. Rinse teapots and cups with warm water after use and allow them to dry fully before storing. Avoid detergents on unglazed interiors where possible, as the ceramic can absorb soap residue and affect flavour over time.
Bamboo tools in a matcha green tea set should also be rinsed and dried carefully after use. Rinse your chasen whisk in warm water only and leave it upright or on a whisk holder to maintain its shape.
Many tea drinkers find that dedicated teaware gradually develops its own unique character the more it's used, particularly with green teas brewed regularly in the same pot.
