Salted Cherry Blossom Tea is a traditional Japanese tea made from salted and preserved cherry blossoms. Salted sakura, a specific form of this tea, is made using fresh-picked cherry blossoms that are preserved in salt and plum vinegar, contrasting with the sweeter versions of sakura tea.

What is Cherry Blossom Tea

Cherry Blossom Tea, also known as Sakura Tea, is a unique and delicate tea made from salt-pickled cherry blossoms. This tea is particularly cherished in Japan during the early spring season when cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The process of making this tea involves infusing the salt-pickled cherry blossoms in hot water, which releases their subtle floral flavour and aroma. Cherry Blossom Tea is the perfect drink for special occasions, such as weddings and tea ceremonies, and is often enjoyed alongside traditional Japanese sweets. The experience of sipping this tea is as much about savouring its delicate taste as it is about appreciating the beauty of the rehydrated blossoms floating in your cup.

The flowers are picked in the spring when in full bloom from the Japanese cherry blossom trees. After harvesting, the blossoms are washed, then soaked in ume (plum) vinegar and salt to preserve them.

Subtle, Floral Aroma

The tea has a delicate, slightly salty flavour with a subtle floral aroma. Unlike other tea varieties, it doesn’t taste like a typical tea made from tea leaves; instead, it offers a mild, refreshing taste that is more about the experience and the subtlety of the cherry blossoms than a strong flavour profile.

History of Sakura Tea

The history of Sakura Tea dates back to the Edo period in Japan, a time when cherry blossoms were first preserved using salt and plum vinegar. Over the centuries, Sakura Tea has grown in popularity and today, this tea is not only a beloved drink in Japan but has also gained appreciation worldwide for its unique flavour and aromatic qualities. The tradition of enjoying Sakura Tea continues to symbolize the beauty and fleeting nature of cherry blossoms, making it a cherished part of Japanese culture. The tea symbolizes new beginnings and is thought to bring good fortune.

Making Cherry Blossom Tea

To make the tea, place a few of the salted blossoms in a cup, and pour boiled water over them. The boiled water rehydrates the blossoms, causing the petals to unfurl and release their aroma, transforming the tea into a visually stunning and aromatic beverage.

Health Benefits of Tea

Cherry Blossom Tea is not only a delightful and unique beverage but also offers several health benefits. Rich in antioxidants, this tea can help reduce inflammation and improve cardiovascular health. Its anti-inflammatory properties can soothe digestive issues and alleviate stress, making it a calming drink. Additionally, Cherry Blossom Tea has antibacterial properties that can boost the immune system, contributing to overall wellness. Incorporating this tea into your diet can be a delicious way to enjoy both its unique flavour and its health-promoting qualities.

Only source in UK and very good, quick delivery

I have been trying to source salted cherry blossom for a few weeks in the UK and stumbled upon them from Wasabi on a last ditch search and made some cherry blossom cookies using these and the only thing I could not work out if I could actually taste them in the cookies until they had aged for about 48 hours.

Excellent and had enough to use in 16 cookies

Hi Anthony, thank you for writing and great you finally found us and the salted cherry blossoms. Interesting that it took some time for the flavour to develop in the cookies, and good to know this. They sounds delicious and if you'd like to share the recipe, we'd love to include it on our website - crediting you of course!
