This is a unique condiment by Japanese producer Ogon no Mura that combines the light, citrus flavour of fresh yuzu juice with a touch of tomato to create a distinct twist on a traditional ponzu sauce.

Ponzu is a staple in Japanese cuisine and is usually a citrus based sauce with a refreshing zesty tang that’s balanced by the saltiness of soy sauce and umami from dashi. It’s light but intensely flavourful, making it excellent for pairing with delicately flavoured food, such as seafood or vegetables.

Kito yuzu is renowned in Japan for its deep, fragrant citrus aroma and balanced acidity, grown in the Kito region of Tokushima Prefecture. The fresh yuzu fruit is harvested at peak ripeness, ensuring a vibrant, zingy flavour.

Tomatoes are rich in glutamates, which are compounds that give foods a savoury, umami flavour. When combined with soy sauce, which is also high in umami, tomato brings a subtle sweetness, depth and enriches ponzu’s savoury taste.

The use of a white soy sauce base adds saltiness and umami, balancing the tartness of the yuzu and the sweetness of the tomato.

Ogon no Mura (translated as "Golden Village") is a Japanese brand known for its high-quality, artisanal products that focus on regional ingredients.

As a dipping sauce for sashimi, sushi, grilled meats, vegetables, shrimp or crab. The citrusy yuzu enhances the freshness of seafood, while the tomato’s subtle sweetness rounds out the flavours.

Whisk it with a small amount of olive oil or sesame oil for a refreshing salad dressing. It pairs well with mixed greens, avocado, and even citrus fruits in salads. For a more robust flavour, try adding a little miso paste or honey.

Marinade for fish (like salmon or cod) or meat such as chicken or pork for 15-30 minutes before cooking. The yuzu helps tenderise the meat, while the tomato adds a slight sweetness.

Drizzle it over grilled chicken, pork, beef or tofu after cooking to give a zesty, umami-rich finish. Its acidity cuts through the richness of grilled flavours, making the dish feel lighter and more balanced.

Drizzle it over chilled tofu or cold noodles for a quick and healthy side dish.

Add a dash to miso soup or ramen for a citrusy brightness, balancing out richer flavours like pork broth or creamy miso.
