Have you ever wanted to grow your own fresh wasabi? You may be surprised to learn that the UK has ideal conditions for this - and it's not as hard as you think! A wasabi plant is ideal for occupying that shady spot in your garden where not much else will grow.

Did you know? Most Western 'wasabi' paste is actually a mixture of horseradish, mustard and green food colouring. Real wasabi paste is a Japanese delicacy that comes from wasabia japonica, or Japanese horseradish. Fresh wasabi root (actually a stem) has a complex flavour, sweet pungency and fresh taste compared with store-bought wasabi. The leaf stems, wasabi leaves and delicately scented white flowers are all delicious, too.

As well as wasabi plants, we stock Japanese citrus trees such as yuzu trees and Japanese bitter orange trees, sansho and Szechuan pepper trees, shiso and edamame bean plants and more. Our plants are limited to seasonal availability - if we don't have something in stock, you can sign up for email alerts on all product pages.

Frequently asked questions

Growing wasabi at home takes patience and the right environment – we would know, as we’re the first company to cultivate it in the UK! Here’s our top tips for growing amazing wasabi. 

1. Create the Right Environment

Wasabi thrives in cool, shaded conditions, mimicking its natural mountain stream habitat. Keep temperatures between 7–21°C, and on hot days, keep it out of the sun. Indirect light works best. Too much sun can scorch the leaves, while high heat can stunt growth.

2. Choose Moist, Well-Draining Soil

Use a rich, organic soil mix that retains water. 

3. Keep the Soil Consistently Damp

Regular watering is essential – wasabi should never dry out completely. Aim for soil that retains moisture, and mist your plant regularly.

4. Protect from Heat and Frost

Wasabi is sensitive to extremes. It gets very cold in the UK during winter, so move containers indoors and keep them well covered to prevent frost. And when we do get a heatwave, it’s essential to prevent your wasabi from getting too much direct sunlight. 

5. Be Patient 

Wasabi takes about 18–24 months to mature. You can harvest leaves along the way, but wait until the rhizome is thick and firm before pulling it up for that signature fresh wasabi flavour.

Our wasabi plants all start out at roughly the same size, but how they grow will depend on the conditions they’re kept in. If you want to try your luck at growing wasabi, we sell individual plants as well as packs of 3 and 5, alongside our speciality wasabi starter kits with everything you need to enjoy some fresh wasabi now as well as cultivate it at home. A well established plant will send large heart-shaped leaves 60cm high, making a striking feature in a shady spot where other plants might struggle to gather enough light. 

Any of our plants and trees can be shipped within the UK. If you’re in the EU and want to order fresh plants and products, or even our own Wasabi Label products, please visit our partners Dutch Wasabi based in Amsterdam. 

Unfortunately, if you’re based in Canada, we will not be able to fulfill your order for fresh plants, as the USDA/AAFC has determined it illegal to import plants/fresh produce.

Yes – each product page includes a photo gallery for each different type of plant and their fruit. However, if you require further information, please get in touch with our team at hello@thewasabicompany.co.uk.

We take great care to ensure your order reaches you in perfect condition. If you are dissatisfied with any of our products we will be happy to offer a replacement item, refund or a discount for your next order. 

You have 14 days after receiving your item to request a return. Only non-perishable or faulty products may be returned. If you need to return an item, you can contact us at hello@thewasabicompany.co.uk. 

We take great care of every plant whilst it is with us and ensure it is well looked after and healthy before being sent out to customers.  All plants and trees are carefully packaged to avoid damage in transit and sent via DHL Express (or Royal Mail 24h for UK Islands & Highlands). There is a care guide available on the product page for every plant, and these will also be included with your order.  The ongoing condition of the plant can depend on a range of factors, including care and environment.
