Frequently asked questions

The most popular Japanese barbecue grill in Japan, a Konro grill, or hibachi grill, is used for cooking BBQ, grilling meat and cooking other food. Made from porous clay formed in the sea from fossilised remains, it has superior heat insulation properties that can create a delicious outer layer to your food without losing the moist tender meat inside.

Konro grills aren’t just limited to Japanese cuisine either – experiment with fusion meals or embrace a new way of cooking your favourite dishes with this handy outdoor appliance.

Konro grills are similar to their Western counterparts – the classic barbecue. Simply add some charcoal and light her up, offering you a hot grill to cook and grill meats with ease. We recommend using binchotan charcoal with your Konro grill, as it is virtually smoke, flame and odour free.

To use, simply add your charcoal in a single layer and wait until the coal glows red hot. Once it hits a high heat, add your fresh foods onto the metal grill. The hot heat and design of the Konro grill traps food moisture for perfectly cooked meat. Remove food once thoroughly cooked, and it’s ready to enjoy!

In short, no. If you’ve ever been to Japan, or even just a Japanese restaurant, you may have seen Konro grills used indoors. However, this is because the restaurant has been designed with enough ventilation to release the smoke and carbon monoxide that comes from burning charcoal.

For your own safety, we always recommend using Konro grills outside – even when using binchotan charcoal.
